India RERA Projects Face New Steel Quality Needs

India’s expanding infrastructure and real estate pipeline is creating a larger role for stainless steel, but industry capacity alone may not be enough to meet the next phase of demand. With applications spreading across transport, water systems, construction and clean-energy projects, the focus is shifting towards skilled fabrication, consistent standards and longer-lasting materials issues that also matter for RERA-regulated housing and urban development.

Domestic stainless steel consumption reached about 4.8 million tonnes in FY25, up around 8% year on year. Consumption has risen sharply over the past five years, while per-capita use remains at roughly 3.4 kg, compared with more than 6 kg globally. Industry estimates suggest demand could continue growing by 7-8% annually over the next few years. For cities, the significance goes beyond metal production. Stainless steel is increasingly used in metro systems, airports, water infrastructure, construction and industrial facilities because its corrosion resistance and durability can reduce maintenance requirements over an asset’s life. This becomes particularly relevant as Indian cities invest in infrastructure that must withstand heavier use, extreme weather and longer operating cycles. Yet domestic manufacturing capacity remains underused. India has around 7.5 million tonnes of installed stainless steel capacity, with utilisation estimated at about 60-65%. Imports also continue to account for a substantial share of domestic consumption.

Closing this gap will require more than additional plants; it will depend on improving capabilities across processing, fabrication, installation and quality control. The downstream workforce is a key weakness. Industry assessments indicate that only about one-third of independent fabricators can currently be classified as skilled. As stainless steel moves into more technically demanding applications, inadequate fabrication practices can affect safety, material efficiency and the expected service life of infrastructure. This has implications for real estate as well. Under the RERA framework, project quality and long-term asset performance are important considerations for homebuyers. Greater use of technically appropriate, durable materials can support buildings that require less maintenance, although material selection must remain based on project design, specifications and cost considerations rather than regulation alone.

The next opportunity lies in connecting manufacturers, fabricators, architects, engineers, training institutions and policymakers. Better technical standards, corrosion-management practices, lifecycle costing and workforce training could improve productivity while reducing material waste. India’s stainless steel opportunity is therefore not simply about producing more. Building a stronger ecosystem around skills, quality and innovation could help infrastructure and real estate projects deliver greater durability while supporting a more resource-efficient urban future.
