India RERA Projects Watch Global Steel Output Trends

Global steel production fell sharply month on month in July, with output from 70 reporting countries reaching 149.2 million tonnes, down from 155.7 million tonnes in June. The annual decline was modest at 0.3%, but the steep monthly drop highlights uneven industrial demand, especially in China, with implications for construction costs, infrastructure pipelines and urban development.

China remained the dominant producer, accounting for about 51.5% of global output with 76.9 million tonnes in July. Its production was 3.6% lower than a year earlier and well below June levels. The slowdown is significant because China’s property and construction sectors are major consumers of steel, while weaker building activity can influence global prices and trade flows. India, however, continued to move in the opposite direction. Domestic mills produced 14.4 million tonnes in July, compared with 14.1 million tonnes in June and 14.0 million tonnes a year earlier. Production during January-July was 101.1 million tonnes, representing a 6.1% annual increase. The figures underline the strength of India’s infrastructure-led demand even as the wider market remains uneven.

That resilience matters for India’s expanding urban economy. Steel is central to metro systems, bridges, railway infrastructure, industrial buildings, housing and commercial construction. Sustained domestic output can help support large infrastructure programmes, although input costs and market volatility remain important considerations for developers and public agencies. For RERA-regulated housing projects, steel market movements can also affect construction budgets and delivery planning. Developers working under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act need to manage project timelines and financial commitments carefully when material prices and supply conditions change. The connection is indirect, but prolonged cost volatility can eventually influence project viability and housing affordability.

Other major producers also recorded gains. US output rose to 7.4 million tonnes in July, while Türkiye produced 3.4 million tonnes. South Korea, Germany and Vietnam also posted year-on-year increases. In contrast, January-July production was lower in China, Russia, Brazil and Japan. The divergence suggests that steel demand is increasingly shaped by regional economic conditions rather than a single global cycle. China’s weaker construction demand contrasts with stronger infrastructure and industrial activity in several other markets. For Indian cities, the next challenge will be balancing rapid infrastructure and housing expansion with material efficiency and lower-carbon construction. Steel remains essential to urban growth, but future projects will increasingly need to consider recycled content, efficient design and emissions alongside cost and speed.
