JK Tyre Joins RE100, Commits to 100% Renewable Energy by 2050

JK Tyre & Industries has reinforced its dedication to sustainability by officially joining the RE100 initiative, a global platform that brings together businesses committed to using 100% renewable electricity. With this step, the company becomes the first Indian tyre manufacturer and the 16th Indian business to pledge such a commitment. As part of its long-term sustainability goals, JK Tyre aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity usage across its operations by 2050. The company has also set an ambitious midterm goal to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity by 50% by FY’30, relative to the base financial year 2019.

This move aligns with JK Tyre’s overarching vision of “today for tomorrow,” a motto that reflects the company’s belief in taking decisive action now to secure a sustainable future. Dr Raghupati Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director of JK Tyre, emphasised the company’s commitment, stating, “As an environmentally conscious brand, energy efficiency and conservation remain at the top of our priority list.”

Currently, JK Tyre has already made significant strides towards renewable energy, with 40% of its total energy consumption sourced from renewables. Additionally, the company has achieved a 64% reduction in its GHG emission intensity since the base year of 2013-14, highlighting its progress in addressing climate change and its dedication to reducing its carbon footprint. India Executive Director at the Climate Group, which runs the RE100 initiative, lauded JK Tyre’s decision, calling it a “milestone commitment.” She noted that the company’s decision to procure renewable electricity for its energy-intensive manufacturing operations sets a strong example for others in the industrial sector, showing that large-scale manufacturing can successfully transition to cleaner energy sources.

Beyond energy, JK Tyre has set a global benchmark for water usage in its manufacturing processes, ensuring zero liquid discharge across all its Indian facilities. Additionally, the company’s plants are zero-waste-to-landfill and completely free of single-use plastics, underscoring its commitment to a circular economy and reducing its environmental impact. JK Tyre’s entry into RE100 reflects an important step in the company’s broader strategy to embrace sustainability, foster energy efficiency, and become a leader in environmentally responsible manufacturing practices. With its clear goals and strong track record, JK Tyre is setting an example for other Indian businesses in the race to mitigate climate change and promote sustainability within their industries.
