JSW Cement Capacity Expands Across Northern Markets

A new grinding unit at Nagaur, Rajasthan, has taken JSW Cement’s total grinding capacity to 25.1 million tonnes a year, expanding its ability to supply northern markets. The 1 MTPA addition lifts the Nagaur site to 3.5 MTPA and comes as the company builds a wider manufacturing network across regions where housing, infrastructure and industrial construction are increasing.

The expansion follows JSW Cement’s entry into North India through its Nagaur integrated plant, which began commercial sales in April 2026. The facility initially combined 3.3 MTPA of clinker capacity with 2.5 MTPA of grinding capacity. The additional unit now brings the site closer to the scale planned for its longer-term regional strategy.  For cities and construction markets, the significance is less about corporate scale and more about where cement is produced. Cement is a high-volume, relatively low-value-to-weight material, making transport a major part of its supply chain. More regional grinding capacity can allow producers to position finished cement closer to consumption centres, potentially reducing haulage distances and improving supply responsiveness.

That benefit, however, depends on utilisation, logistics and market pricing. JSW Cement reported that the Nagaur operation averaged 55% utilisation in the first quarter of FY27, while its overall sales volume rose 15% year on year to 3.81 million tonnes. Revenue from operations increased 22% to ₹1,896 crore, although operating EBITDA fell 7% to ₹298.6 crore, showing that higher volumes have not automatically translated into stronger operating profitability.  The Nagaur cement capacity addition also fits into a much larger expansion programme. The company has outlined a pathway towards 35.25 MTPA of grinding capacity by 2028, with further projects planned across Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra and other markets. For the built environment, the expansion raises a broader question: how much new cement capacity will be needed as India adds housing, roads, industrial facilities and urban infrastructure, and how efficiently that capacity can be operated. Cement production remains energy and carbon intensive, making efficiency improvements important alongside capacity growth.

JSW Cement has been developing waste-heat recovery and alternative-fuel systems at Nagaur, while its wider operations are also adding renewable power. Such measures could help moderate the environmental footprint of additional production, but their impact will depend on actual utilisation and the pace at which cleaner energy and material-efficiency measures scale. The immediate test is therefore not simply whether Nagaur cement capacity can expand, but whether the additional supply can be absorbed without triggering excessive regional competition, while improving logistics and supporting more resource-efficient construction across northern India.
