Mumbai Coatings Expo Signals Shift To Green Materials

A major industry gathering in Mumbai is underscoring how the paint industry event ecosystem is becoming central to shaping sustainable construction materials, as global and domestic players align around low-emission and high-performance coatings. Held at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, the three-day event brought together manufacturers, raw material suppliers, and technology providers from across the coatings value chain.

The exhibition, hosted between February 19 and 21, drew strong participation from international and domestic stakeholders, reflecting India’s growing role in the global coatings market. Spread across multiple halls, the event showcased developments in paints, coatings, construction chemicals, and allied materials—segments that are increasingly critical to the built environment. At its core, the paint industry event highlighted a structural shift in how coatings are being designed and used. Traditionally viewed as finishing materials, paints and coatings are now being engineered for energy efficiency, durability, and environmental performance. From cool roof coatings that reduce heat absorption to advanced protective layers that extend infrastructure life, the sector is evolving into a key enabler of climate-resilient construction.Industry experts attending the event pointed to rising demand for water-based, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) formulations as a defining trend. These solutions reduce indoor air pollution and align with stricter environmental regulations, particularly in dense urban areas where air quality and thermal comfort are major concerns.

Another key theme was the growing integration of coatings with urban infrastructure systems. Innovations on display included materials designed for corrosion resistance in transport networks, fire-protective coatings for buildings, and specialised solutions for electric vehicle components. Such advancements reflect the expanding role of coatings beyond aesthetics, positioning them as functional elements in modern infrastructure. The event also highlighted the importance of supply chain collaboration. With raw materials accounting for a significant share of production costs, the exhibition served as a platform for manufacturers to connect directly with suppliers of resins, pigments, additives, and equipment. This direct engagement is increasingly important in a market where cost pressures and sustainability targets are reshaping procurement strategies. For urban development, the implications are significant. As cities expand and infrastructure investments scale up, the demand for durable, energy-efficient, and low-carbon materials is rising. Coatings that enhance building longevity and reduce maintenance cycles can contribute to lower lifecycle costs and reduced environmental impact—key priorities for planners and policymakers.

At the same time, the sector faces challenges around affordability and adoption. While sustainable coatings offer long-term benefits, their upfront costs can be higher, requiring greater awareness and incentives to drive widespread use. Industry stakeholders suggest that regulatory support and green building standards could play a role in accelerating this transition.Looking ahead, such paint industry event platforms are expected to play an increasingly strategic role in bridging innovation and implementation. As India’s construction sector grows, the alignment between material science, sustainability, and urban planning will be critical in shaping cities that are not only larger—but more resilient and resource-efficient.
