Mumbai Smart Homes Boom Reshapes Housing

India’s smart home market is entering a faster growth phase, with the opening of Smart Home Expo 2026 in Mumbai highlighting rising demand for connected, energy-efficient and security-focused living spaces. The shift matters for cities, developers and households as technology becomes central to housing design, utility savings and urban quality of life.

The three-day Smart Home Expo opened at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, bringing together more than 450 brands and thousands of products spanning automation systems, intelligent lighting, audio-visual technology, building controls and home security solutions. Organisers said the scale of participation reflects increasing confidence in India as a high-growth destination for intelligent living technologies. Industry estimates suggest India’s smart living ecosystem is benefiting from rapid urbanisation, wider broadband access, 5G connectivity and rising consumer interest in convenience-led housing. Separate market projections indicate the smart home segment could reach $6.71 billion in 2026, up from $5.20 billion in 2025, with strong long-term expansion potential. For citizens, the India smart homes market is no longer limited to premium residences. Smart locks, energy-saving switches, app-based lighting, leak detectors and air-quality systems are increasingly entering mid-income apartments and gated communities. As electricity tariffs rise and water stress worsens in many cities, households are looking for tools that cut waste and improve efficiency.Developers are also adapting. Real estate consultants say homebuyers increasingly expect automation-ready wiring, integrated security and EV charging compatibility in new projects. What was once marketed as a luxury feature is gradually becoming part of mainstream residential planning, especially in metros and emerging Tier II cities.

The sustainability angle is significant. Smart thermostats, occupancy sensors and automated lighting can lower electricity use in residential towers and commercial buildings. Water monitoring devices can identify leaks early, reducing losses in cities where supply systems are already stretched. Over time, such technologies could help urban India reduce pressure on power grids and municipal infrastructure.Major companies including Havells India, Godrej Enterprises Group, Schneider Electric, Panasonic and global electronics brands are expanding offerings in this space, while startups are building software layers for integrated control systems. This mix of domestic manufacturing and imported technology is creating new business opportunities in installation, maintenance and after-sales services. However, barriers remain. High upfront costs, fragmented standards, data privacy concerns and limited consumer awareness still slow wider adoption. In many residential projects, retrofitting older buildings is more expensive than integrating systems during construction. For policymakers, the India smart homes market also intersects with larger urban priorities such as climate resilience, digital infrastructure and safer housing. If standards improve and products become more affordable, smart technologies could support ageing populations, women’s safety, energy conservation and better building management.

The bigger takeaway from Mumbai’s expo is that India’s housing sector is changing. Homes are being redefined not only by location and size, but by how efficiently they use energy, protect residents and connect to the wider city. The next growth phase will depend on making intelligent living accessible beyond affluent buyers.
