NCB Signs MoUs to Propel Cement Industry Decarbonization

In a significant step towards enhancing sustainability and technological innovation within India’s cement industry, the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB) has signed two major Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during the 18th NCB International Conference and Exhibition on Cement and Concrete. The event, being held at the Yashobhoomi, IICC Dwarka, is expected to conclude on 29th November 2024 with the prestigious presentation of the National Awards for Cement Industry and Best Paper Awards.

The first MoU, signed between NCB and the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) India, marks a pivotal move towards advancing decarbonization within India’s cement sector. The agreement, formalized by Dr. L P Singh, Director General of NCB, and Sh. Manoj Rustagi, Director of GCCA India, will bolster ongoing research efforts aimed at reducing carbon emissions in cement production. With the Indian government’s ambitious target to achieve “Net Zero” emissions by 2070, this partnership is expected to play a crucial role in making the Indian cement industry more environmentally responsible and globally competitive. The second MoU was signed between NCB and the AIC-Plasmatech Innovation Foundation to explore the use of Thermal Plasma Torch Technology in cement production.

Dr. L P Singh, Director General of NCB, and Dr. Nirav Jamnapara, Director of AIC-Plasmatech, signed the agreement to investigate how thermal plasma technologies can revolutionize the cement manufacturing process. This cutting-edge technology promises to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions, aligning with global trends toward sustainable industrial practices. Both MoUs are part of a broader strategy to ensure that India’s cement industry remains a leader in sustainable practices and cutting-edge technological innovation. As the sector continues to grapple with environmental challenges, these initiatives signal a commitment to achieving long-term decarbonization goals and positioning India’s cement producers for a greener future. The 18th NCB International Conference serves as an ideal platform for these landmark agreements, bringing together industry experts, researchers, and policymakers to discuss solutions to the pressing issues facing the cement sector. The MoUs signed at the event are expected to be a turning point in the industry’s journey towards cleaner, more efficient production methods, contributing to India’s overall sustainability goals.
