Nuvoco Links Cement Power To Rajasthan Renewables

Nuvoco Vistas is moving to secure more renewable electricity for its Rajasthan cement operations through a 46.4 MW wind-solar hybrid project at Bhikamkhore, adding battery storage to the supply arrangement. The project is significant beyond the cement sector: it shows how energy-intensive industries are using dedicated renewable assets to reduce exposure to fossil-based power while building a more predictable electricity supply for large manufacturing sites.

The project combines 20 MW of wind capacity with 26.4 MWdc of solar capacity and a 2-MWh battery energy storage system. Electricity is planned to reach Nuvoco through the State Transmission Utility open-access network. The company is also set to acquire a 26% stake in the project’s special purpose vehicle, Clean Max Ilgohp, under agreements signed with CleanMax.  Once operational, the facility is expected to produce about 100 million units of electricity a year. Nuvoco estimates that it could avoid roughly 125,485 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually across Scope 1 and Scope 2. These figures are project estimates rather than achieved reductions, and the facility is not yet operating.

For urban infrastructure, the development points to a wider shift in how industrial power demand is being managed. Cement production is electricity-intensive and closely tied to housing, roads, transport systems and other construction activity. As cities expand, lowering the emissions embedded in these materials becomes increasingly important to the overall carbon footprint of the built environment. The hybrid model also addresses a practical weakness of relying on a single renewable source. Solar output varies with daylight, while wind generation changes with weather conditions. Battery storage can help smooth short-term fluctuations, although a 2-MWh system is modest relative to the scale of a continuous industrial operation. The project will therefore remain dependent on grid connectivity and the wider power system for balancing and reliability. The move comes as Nuvoco works on several measures to lower manufacturing emissions, including renewable electricity, waste heat recovery, energy-efficiency measures and alternative fuels. Its FY2026 reporting also indicates existing renewable-energy consumption, showing that the Rajasthan project forms part of a broader transition rather than representing a complete switch away from conventional power.

The Rajasthan project also highlights the infrastructure requirements behind industrial decarbonisation. Open-access transmission capacity, storage, grid reliability and clear power-supply arrangements will determine how effectively renewable generation can serve factories at scale. These systems matter not only to companies but also to the broader cost and carbon profile of future construction. For cities, the next measure of progress will be whether cleaner industrial power translates into sustained emissions reductions as production expands. Renewable procurement can lower operational impacts, but deeper decarbonisation of cement will also depend on material efficiency, alternative fuels, process innovation and cleaner construction practices.
