Tata Steel Flags India Competitiveness As Trade Shifts

India is attracting greater global attention as companies reassess manufacturing bases, supply chains and strategic partnerships amid geopolitical uncertainty. At a management convention in New Delhi on September 21, the chief executive of a major steel company said the opportunity could translate into stronger investment and industrial growth only if India improves its competitiveness and capabilities.

The comments come as international trade becomes more fragmented. Tariffs, trade restrictions and geopolitical tensions are forcing businesses to reconsider how production, sourcing and logistics are organised. The shift could create space for India to expand its role in global value chains, but access to that opportunity will depend on costs, infrastructure, skills, technology and the reliability of supply networks. The discussion at the All India Management Association’s Platinum Jubilee National Management Convention also highlighted the changing priorities of global businesses. Trade and investment are increasingly being considered alongside technology, energy security, supply chains and the ability of emerging economies to participate in higher-value activities.

For Indian cities, the competitiveness question extends beyond industrial policy. New manufacturing capacity requires dependable electricity, transport links, ports, industrial land, water systems and worker housing. If these systems expand without coordinated planning, higher economic activity can also translate into congestion, rising land costs, pressure on water resources and greater environmental stress. mThat makes India competitiveness relevant not only to large manufacturers but also to the urban regions expected to accommodate new investment. Industrial corridors and expanding employment centres will need infrastructure that can support businesses while remaining resilient to flooding, heat and other climate risks.

The steel sector itself illustrates the complexity. Companies operating in India face exposure to global raw-material prices and increasingly stringent environmental requirements in export markets. The chief executive has previously discussed the need for Indian industry to respond to carbon-related trade measures, including the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which places greater importance on emissions associated with imported goods. A separate discussion at the same convention also linked future economic resilience to supply-chain disruptions and geopolitical risks, underlining how efficiency alone may not protect businesses from external shocks. The immediate opportunity, therefore, is broader than attracting factories. India competitiveness will increasingly depend on whether infrastructure, skills, clean energy, logistics and urban services develop together. For cities and citizens, the measure of this growth will ultimately be whether new economic activity creates productive employment and investment without adding unsustainable pressure to land, resources and public infrastructure.
