India’s expanding domestic steel manufacturing ecosystem has gained another strategic milestone after AM NS India steel was used in the construction of INS Malvan, the Indian Navy’s recently commissioned anti submarine warfare vessel. The development highlights how locally produced specialised steel is becoming increasingly central to defence manufacturing while strengthening industrial capabilities that also support civilian infrastructure, engineering and advanced manufacturing.

Commissioned at Karwar in Karnataka last month, INS Malvan is the second vessel in the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft programme. Designed and built in India with a high proportion of indigenous systems, the warship forms part of a broader effort to reduce dependence on imported defence materials while reinforcing domestic manufacturing networks.The inclusion of AM NS India steel in the vessel illustrates a wider industrial transition in which specialised steel production is moving beyond conventional construction and automotive applications into strategic sectors requiring high-strength, corrosion-resistant and marine-grade materials.
