India Green Hydrogen Boosts Low Carbon Steel

India has initiated the next phase of its industrial decarbonisation strategy by inviting proposals for pilot projects that will integrate green hydrogen into steel manufacturing.

The move is expected to test cleaner production pathways for one of the country’s most emissions intensive industries while supporting long term efforts to build climate resilient infrastructure and strengthen low carbon manufacturing capabilities.
The pilot initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce industrial emissions without compromising economic growth or infrastructure expansion.Steel production remains fundamental to India’s urban development agenda, supplying material for transport systems,affordable housing,renewable energy projects and large scale public infrastructure. However, conventional steelmaking relies heavily on fossil fuels,making the sector a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.Industry experts believe pilot scale demonstrations are an essential step before commercial deployment of hydrogen-based steelmaking.Green hydrogen,produced through electrolysis powered by renewable electricity,can replace coal or natural gas in selected production processes,substantially lowering carbon emissions if deployed at scale.While the technology has attracted growing global interest,its commercial viability depends on operational performance,infrastructure readiness and production costs under Indian conditions.The proposed demonstration projects are expected to evaluate technical feasibility, energy requirements and economic performance across different steel manufacturing processes.

Researchers note that generating practical operational data will help policymakers refine future industrial policies,investment frameworks and regulatory standards needed to support wider adoption of low-carbon technologies.For rapidly expanding cities, the implications extend beyond industrial policy.Urban planners increasingly recognise that reducing embodied carbon the emissions associated with manufacturing construction materials is becoming as important as improving energy efficiency in buildings.Wider adoption of green hydrogen in steel production could lower the environmental footprint of roads,bridges,metro systems,airports and residential developments, contributing to more sustainable urban growth.The initiative also reflects changing international market dynamics.Export oriented industries are preparing for stricter carbon disclosure requirements and emerging border adjustment mechanisms introduced by major trading partners.Developing expertise in hydrogen based steel production could improve India’s long term competitiveness while helping domestic manufacturers adapt to evolving environmental standards in global markets.Nevertheless,significant challenges remain before large-scale commercial adoption becomes feasible.

Experts point to the need for affordable renewable electricity, expanded hydrogen production capacity,dedicated transport infrastructure, storage systems and investment support to reduce project risks.They also stress that workforce training, research partnerships and technology development will be necessary to accelerate industrial transformation while maintaining productivity.Looking ahead, policymakers and industry stakeholders view these pilot projects as an important learning phase rather than an immediate commercial solution.The evidence generated could guide future investments, regulatory reforms and financing mechanisms that enable cleaner steel production over the coming decade.As India’s infrastructure ambitions continue to grow,integrating green hydrogen into heavy industry may become a key pillar of building cities that are economically competitive,resource efficient and better aligned with long term climate goals.
