India Industrial Growth Eases While Steel Demand Holds

India’s industrial expansion moderated in July 2026, with factory output growing 6.7% year on year after an 8.8% rise in June. The slowdown points to a softer pace of economic activity, but continued strength in manufacturing, capital goods and infrastructure suggests that steel-intensive sectors remain active, with implications for construction, transport and urban investment.

Manufacturing remained the largest contributor to industrial activity, expanding 7.3% in July. Engineering, automobiles, electronics and plastic and rubber products helped sustain production, although the pace was below June’s 9.5% growth. For the steel market, the composition of manufacturing growth matters as much as the headline IIP number. Automotive production, industrial machinery and engineering equipment require substantial quantities of steel. Continued investment in these areas could therefore keep steel demand relatively resilient even as overall industrial growth loses momentum. Capital goods provided a stronger signal. Output in the segment increased 16.1% during July, extending a four-month run of double-digit growth. The trend indicates continued spending on machinery and productive capacity, which can support demand for flat steel and other engineered products used across industrial projects.

Infrastructure activity also remained positive, with output rising 6.9%. Infrastructure investment has a direct connection with construction materials, particularly reinforcement bars, structural steel and other long products. Sustained activity in roads, urban infrastructure and industrial construction could provide a steady base for steel demand in the months ahead. The mining figures offer a contrasting signal. Mining output fell 0.9% year on year in July, compared with strong growth a year earlier. While weaker mining does not automatically translate into lower steel consumption, it can affect the availability and cost of raw materials used by steelmakers. Consumer spending presented another mixed picture. Consumer durables grew 10.5%, supporting steel-intensive industries such as automobiles and appliances. Consumer non-durables, however, contracted 1%, indicating that household demand is not moving uniformly across categories.

RERA remains relevant to the wider construction ecosystem because housing activity influences demand for materials, infrastructure and related services. However, the July industrial data does not by itself indicate any change in RERA implementation, housing regulation or project approvals. For cities, the broader signal is that investment-led activity remains important to industrial demand. If manufacturing, infrastructure and capital expenditure stay firm, steel demand may remain supported despite slower aggregate industrial growth. The next indicators to watch will be actual construction activity, steel inventories, domestic production and raw-material costs. These factors will determine whether industrial resilience translates into sustained demand across India’s built environment.
