India Infrastructure Growth Keeps Steel Demand Elevated

NEW DELHI: India’s construction and infrastructure pipeline is entering a period of sustained steel demand, with consumption expected to grow faster than new production capacity through FY2029. The trend could keep steel plants running above 90% utilisation while influencing construction costs, project timelines and the financial planning of large urban developments, including RERA-regulated housing projects.

Steel consumption has remained resilient despite the seasonal slowdown during the monsoon. Government data shows finished steel consumption rose 7.9% year-on-year to 56 million tonnes during April-July 2026, while finished steel output grew 4.7% to 54.7 million tonnes. The latest industry assessment points to demand growing at roughly 7% annually between FY2026 and FY2029. That pace is expected to remain ahead of capacity expansion, keeping utilisation above 90%. For cities, the implication extends beyond steel mills: construction firms, infrastructure agencies and housing developers may face greater sensitivity to material-cost movements as urban investment continues. The steel demand outlook is closely tied to construction, manufacturing and infrastructure activity. These sectors consume large volumes of reinforcement steel and flat products used in buildings, transport networks, industrial facilities and urban utilities. Government figures also show that April-June finished steel consumption increased 8.3%, underlining the strength of these end-use sectors.

Prices are also beginning to reflect tighter market conditions. Long steel products, widely used in construction, have recovered sharply from their June-July decline. Recent market data cited in the industry assessment indicates a 12% rise over the past month, while rebar prices have gained around ₹5,600 per tonne. The improvement follows the easing of monsoon-related disruptions and the return of stronger construction activity. Trade remains another variable. During April-July, India imported more finished steel than it exported, while policymakers continue to examine trade measures intended to protect domestic producers from disruptive import competition. For the real estate sector, the steel demand outlook creates a mixed picture. Strong construction activity supports employment and urban expansion, but higher input costs can put pressure on project budgets and housing affordability. For RERA-registered developments, sustained cost escalation can make financial discipline and timely project execution more important, particularly for projects with long construction cycles.

The environmental dimension is equally significant. India’s steel capacity is expanding towards the national target of 300 million tonnes by 2030, making the shift towards lower-carbon production increasingly relevant as cities add housing and infrastructure. The next phase of urban growth will therefore depend not only on producing more steel, but on making its supply more efficient, resilient and progressively less carbon-intensive.
