Nouryon Innovation Signals Shift In India Paint Chemistry

A new generation of paint additives aimed at reducing odour and emissions is reshaping formulation strategies in the coatings industry, with Nouryon introducing a polymer-based solution designed for water-based architectural paints. The development reflects a growing industry shift towards healthier indoor environments and stricter environmental compliance, particularly relevant for India’s expanding urban housing and commercial real estate sectors.

The newly launched additive is engineered to improve paint workability while significantly lowering odour levels, addressing one of the most persistent concerns in interior applications. It also enables manufacturers to reduce reliance on glycol-based components—commonly associated with higher volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions—without compromising performance. This innovation aligns with a broader transformation underway in the global and Indian paints market, where demand is steadily moving towards low-VOC and user-friendly coatings. As urban populations grow and indoor air quality becomes a key health consideration, builders and developers are increasingly prioritising materials that minimise chemical exposure in residential and commercial spaces. For India, the implications extend beyond product innovation. The country’s rapid urbanisation, combined with rising awareness around sustainability and wellness, is pushing paint manufacturers to reformulate offerings. Low-odour, low-emission paints are becoming particularly relevant in densely populated urban areas, where ventilation constraints can amplify the impact of chemical fumes during and after application.

From a technical standpoint, the additive enhances what industry experts refer to as “open time”—the duration during which paint remains workable—allowing for smoother application and improved finish quality. At the same time, it maintains key performance attributes such as durability, stain resistance, and water resistance, ensuring that environmental gains do not come at the cost of product longevity. The development also reflects a wider shift towards water-based paint systems, which are gradually replacing solvent-based alternatives across global markets. These systems are inherently lower in emissions and better aligned with regulatory frameworks that are tightening limits on VOC content. In India, such transitions are supported by evolving building standards and increasing adoption of green certification systems in real estate projects. For manufacturers, the challenge lies in balancing performance, cost, and sustainability. While advanced additives offer clear environmental and user benefits, their adoption requires adjustments in formulation processes and supply chains. However, with global companies like Nouryon expanding their presence and technical support capabilities in India, access to such technologies is becoming more feasible for domestic producers.

Looking ahead, the shift towards low-odour and low-emission paints is expected to accelerate, driven by both regulatory pressure and consumer preference. For India’s urban development landscape, this transition signals a move towards healthier built environments—where construction materials are evaluated not only for durability and cost, but also for their impact on human well-being and environmental sustainability.
